            Throughout art, and the Canadian culture, JEH MacDonald has made various important contributions, all of them incredibly remarkable.  Here are some of his major accomplishments and contributions:

 

  • MacDonald became the art director at the Toronto Commercial Art Firms, Grip Ltd., supervising and inspiring artists in the firm such as Frank Johnston, Tom Thomson, Arthur Lismer and Frank Carmichael.  MacDonald contributed to all of their hard work and efforts, and he contributed to their lives by being a role model, as well as an inspiration for them.
  • James MacDonald is well known for his excellent commercial design work, assisting with the Canadian art reputation, and contributing to Canadian history y being one of the nation’s first professional graphic designers.
  • The experienced artist founded the Hamilton Art School and Ontario College of Art in 1887, helping the Canadian cultural society by developing future artists to contribute to Canada, like himself.
  • He excelled in mural painting and was also a popular art teacher, inspiring youth around him to contribute to their culture, and the rewards of being a professional artist.
  • MacDonald’s contribution to Canadian culture, society, and the art world also led to several awards, among them: in 1909, he was elected to the Ontario Society of Artists; in 1911 he was elected member of the Arts and Letters Club in Toronto, and in 1931 he was elected member of the Royal Canadian Academy

In conclusion, our national Canadian image, in our own eyes has never been the same since the influence of MacDonald’s new ideas, personality, and paintings.  This remarkable man reminded us of how important our Canadian heritage was, and he always will be the role model of artists everywhere, his style, ability to try new things, and openness about any concept in the world, has influenced, and inspired us all.  For all we know, James Edward Hervey MacDonald, changed the art world as we know it, and impacted on our Canadian Heritage forever.
